The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician, Certified to join our team. This position is u nder general supervision of a pharmacist, performs activities associated with supporting pharmacy services including assisting with training programs, monitoring compliance with established policies and procedures, inventory control and special projects as assigned. Coordinates daily functions of Pharmacy Technician (Certified/Trainees) to meet service needs as identified by the pharmacist. Provides supervision to Pharmacy Technicians. Serves as in-charge person of work area in the absence of the pharmacist; determines priorities, and triages questions and needs. Provides orientation and on-the-job training of new technicians. Provides instruction, evaluates performance, and follows up on training needs. Provides input into technician performance evaluations. Assists with interviewing technician candidates and checking references, provides input on evaluation of technician candidates. Provides classroom instruction to new technicians in the absence of the Technician Supervisor/trainer. Coordinates maintenance of area equipment and facility, ordering supplies, and handling/disposition of records, as well as documentation of quality assurance activities. Assists with inventory management and medication recall activities. Checks products prepared by other technicians, as permitted by Iowa law. Assists with implementation of new services and/or development of new procedures. Maintains competency and performs all duties and responsibilities of Pharmacy Technician.
Duties to include:

  1. Assists with preparation and maintenance of aseptic technique training program
    1. Maintain a current training manual that reflects policy and procedures related to aseptic technique
    2. Responsible for initial aseptic technique training of new pharmacists and technicians
  2. Assists with monitoring of aseptic technique competencies
    1. Collect and evaluate data related to aseptic technique competence of staff pharmacists and technicians

      • Fingertip sampling
      • Hand hygiene
      • Chemotherapy preparation
      • Operator validation and observation
      • Gowning technique
      • Knowledge-based exams
    2. Collect and evaluate data related to clean room cleaning activities
  3. Participate in inventory management activities
    1. Assist with ordering of supplies
    2. Assist with ordering of medications
    3. Consistently monitor usage patterns and adjust PAR levels accordingly
    4. Maintain an inventory that will reduce waste
    5. Incorporate strategies to reduce cost
    6. Participate in vault audits
  4. Assists with coordination of resources related to drug shortages
    1. Communicate to staff necessary information regarding drug shortages
      1. Coordinate supply chain
    2. Facilitate implementation of new compounding procedures
      1. Develop new forms and distribute information to staff
    3. Optimize AcuDose inventory for medications in short supply
  5. Serves as a resource for pharmacy informatics
    1. Maintain working knowledge of pharmacy technology
    2. Troubleshoot technology-related issues
    3. Assist in troubleshooting automation-related problems
    4. Orient and train new staff to pharmacy technology
  6. Assists with training and orientation of new staff
    1. Assist with preparing needed training and orientation materials
    2. Assist with training and orientation of new staff
    3. Assist with evaluation of training of new staff
    4. Provide feedback regarding the evaluation of skill level of staff assigned to a given day on the schedule
  7. Participates in orientation of pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy residents, and senior pharmacy students on rotation in the department
  8. Assists with evaluation and implementation of new products/technology
  9. Assists with evaluation and implementation of new policy and procedures
    1. Participate in piloting new programs
    2. Assist with preparing training and orientation materials for new procedures
    3. Assist with training and orientation of staff to new procedures
    4. Assist with central pharmacy equipment modifications, reorganization, and additions to implement new policy and procedure
  10. Assists with scheduling
    1. Participates in schedule preparation in coordination with the technician supervisor
  11. Other duties as assigned
Supervision
Senior Certified Pharmacy Technician
Day-to-day general supervision is provided by the Pharmacy Manager and Technician Supervisor. The Technician Supervisor approves vacation or other leave approval and coordinates other schedule needs.
The Pharmacist in-charge of the pharmacy provides functional supervision for patient care responsibilities.

Schedule: Work 8 hour shifts between the hours of 6:00 am - 4:30 pm
Location: Acute Care - Adult Satellite
Rotations: alternating schedule

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school graduation including a general mathematics course, or the equivalent.
a. Four years of experience as a pharmacy technician including at least one year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician (Certified) or equivalent position, or
b. Four years of experience in a position directly related to the natural sciences, or
c. Four years post high school education in the natural sciences or related area, or years post high school education in the natural sciences or related area, or
d. A combination of related experience and related post high school education to equal four years.

  • National certification as a certified pharmacy technician by a National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited pharmacy technician certification program and examination is required. Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification. An exception to the certification requirement is available to pharmacy interns who maintain registration as a pharmacy intern (per Iowa Administrative Code - Chapter 3, Pharmacy Technicians, Section 3.3) and have six months of experience as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
    Note: Per Board of Pharmacy Regulations (Iowa Administrative Code -- 657-Chapter 3, Pharmacy Technicians):
    1. A pharmacy technician must register with the Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of employment.
    2. Effective July 1, 2009, all pharmacy technicians must be certified by July 1, 2010.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in time sensitive situations.
  • Previous work experience in an environment that included inventory maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Previous work experience in healthcare.
  • Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate At Silver Level.
