About Us:

Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-GNY) is an anti-poverty organization that seeks to end homelessness in the New York metropolitan area by the year 2050. We focus our continuum of care to address the most prevalent causes of homelessness: (1) lack of affordable housing; (2) unmet health needs, including but not limited to mental health and substance use; and (3) lack of jobs that create wealth. In each of these areas we strive to incorporate strategies that address issues of racial equity. We know that our clients are confronting longstanding barriers to accessing quality housing, healthcare, and employment. Our programs are designed to ensure that our clients do not have to face these challenges alone.

Now in our second century of serving those in need, VOA-GNY understands what it takes to heal families and individuals who are in crisis and have experienced trauma. We operate and provide services in emergency shelters, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing for close to 11,000 men, women and children through 65 programs located in New York City, Northern New Jersey, and Westchester annually. We are one of the largest providers of services to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the Greater New York area, serving survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, and others who have behavioral health or substance use needs. Many of VOA-Greater New York’s programs are nationally recognized and meet the rigorous standards of accrediting bodies CARF, COA and the NAEYC.

 Summary:

The Social Worker will enhance existing services to include a thorough assessment of families’ long-term goals at intake and development of service plan to incorporate small achievable tasks leading to permanent housing with enrollment and/or referrals to the community resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Social Work with LMSW. Knowledge of child and adolescent development, emotional/behavioral health and mental health, family dynamics, parent-child relationships, diagnostic classifications. In addition, the position requires a reasonable combination of skills in the following areas: strengths based, solution focused, and family centered practice; experience working with diverse cultures and ethnicities; knowledge of child welfare policies, regulations, safety, permanency, and well-being.Â

Supervisory Role:

This position does have supervisory responsibilities.

Principal Responsibilities:

The below enumerated principal responsibilities are inclusive of both program specific and firm-wide related administration, as applicable.

1. Manage a caseload.

2. Complete Assessment Summary and make determination on type of intervention needed for each family.

3. Develop individualized service plans to focus on recovery and wellness.

4. Maintain service documentation to include client progress notes, observations and interactions about clients and incident reporting when necessary.

5. Provide on-call crisis intervention support.

6. Participate in individual service coordination activities, including vocational and educational services and support recreational and/or socialization activities.

7. Maintain program’s resource directory.

8. Conduct outreach to community-based organizations.

9. Refer families to appropriate community providers to address family needs.

10. Perform other related duties as required.

1. Clients’ wellness is increased through empowerment and skill development to maximize recovery.Â

2. Program staff are informed of clients’ progress.

3. Client develops improved life-skills and is better able to manage his/her daily life.Â

4. Clients arrive at their scheduled appointments and are picked up on time.

5. Clients are provided with behavioral health services based on evidence-based practices.

6. Services provided are consistent with each individual’s strengths, needs, abilities and preferences.Â

7. Activities and services provided meet each individual service needs.

8. Health records (charts) are kept up to date and accurately reflect all services provided.

9. Services provided meet all funding requirements and accrediting body standards.

10. Related duties are performed completely, on time and accurately.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee will be in an office and transitional residential environment.Â

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to have visual acuity, talk and hear while communicating with vendors, peers and/or clients. This position requires sitting, standing, and walking. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items up to 20 pounds.
