Job Description Summary
This position evaluates plant operations and facilities to determine the most efficient manufacturing systems feasible and to provide information as a basis for management planning and decision-making.

Develops, designs and plans equipment and machine layouts, workflow, and safety precautions to maximize the production of the American Falls Lamb Weston facility. Develops labor cost analyses, evaluates worker productivity and recommends improvements to processes. Develops or improves workplace designs. Initiates and evaluates plant project requests through cost justification analysis. 5 years related experience.

Job Description

This position assists and coordinates the various operating departments in the initiation, instigation, and evaluation of new methods, equipment, process and systems to afford total operations costs reductions. The Industrial Engineer utilizes the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, together with a broad grasp of each department's operations and interrelationships, to evaluate and make recommendations to management for the improvement of existing operations or the design, development and installation of new integrated systems of labor, material, and equipment.

This position is concerned with several specific areas: cost reduction, such as direct labor, process improvement, materials and supplies, material handling, and inventory storage; analysis and evaluation for management planning; cost estimating; labor budget planning preparation; capital expenditure request preparation; and standardization of operation methods, crewing, and departmental procedures. Typically, achievement of the above consists of effective coordination and cooperation with department managers and their subordinates. This relationships must be founded upon the intent to render a support function to each other for the overall betterment of the operation facility.

The Industrial Engineer must be capable of applying thorough investigative practices. This would include working knowledge of appropriate levels of mathematics, physics, accounting, statistics, regulatory agency requirements, potato processing techniques, good manufacturing practices, labor relations, and technical report preparation. This person must be capable of applying known industrial engineering practices and deductive reasoning when undertaking a project. Upon completions of a project, studies will be made to determine the advantages gained as a result of the changes made. These will be compared with initial projections of anticipated results, and appropriate reports prepared for plant and corporate management.

On an on-going basis, process and flow diagrams, capacity charts, labor tables, and process descriptions for each product manufactured in the plant will be assembled and maintained. Justification detail for all capital improvement expenditures for the plants will be prepared as requested.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or Engineering or equivalent education/work experience. General knowledge in the relationship between Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Production, and Engineering Departments. Experience in cost reduction and the effect of processing parameters in finished product costs.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management and/or public groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required sit and to use hands to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee works primarily in an office environment where the noise level is moderate. However, the employee will spend approximately 30% of their time in various areas of the plant checking equipment, work in progress and/or supervising employees. While in the plant, the employee will regularly be working near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, and/or airborne particles. The employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold. The employee will be required to climb stairs to the various work platforms. The noise level inside the plant is usually loud. Hearing protection is required and provided by the company.
