PayPal is seeking a high caliber and energetic attorney with experience counseling in-house product and technology teams in areas of advertising technology, loyalty programs, and financial services to support the PayPal Shopping team in its mission to develop powerful new commerce experiences that will fuel stronger relationships between merchants and consumers around the world. The Senior Legal Counsel, Shopping Legal will:
  • Provide legal support for PayPal Shopping initiatives, including deal and offer presentment, product discovery, and rewards and loyalty programs, across mobile, web and in-store experiences.
  • Provide proactive, timely and business-focused legal advice to the PayPal Shopping team on a variety of legal, compliance, and commercial issues.
  • Advise on the design and modification of products, and proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Review product experiences to ensure compliance with applicable laws.
  • Develop appropriate terms, conditions, and disclosures for new product offerings.
  • Monitor new regulatory developments impacting PayPal Shopping and advise business and legal partners on their impact.
  • Coordinate with other members of the PayPal legal and compliance teams, and other cross-functional groups to support PayPal Shopping initiatives globally.

The successful candidate will have the specific qualifications and experience:
  • J.D. or equivalent required.
  • 7 or more years of relevant legal experience (with at least 3+ years of in-house experience at mid-to-large size global technology or software company), with a focus on e-commerce and/or financial services. Significant experience counseling product teams is preferred.
  • Experience advising clients on substantive issues relating to ad tech, affiliate platforms and networks, advertising law, content regulations, and the hosting and/or distribution third party content.
  • Knowledge of regulations and industry guidelines applicable to mobile, social media, and traditional marketing, including CAN SPAM, COPPA, TCPA, and UDAP.
  • Experience advising clients on financial services regulations, data privacy laws as they relate to financial institutions, consumer protection laws; and other guidance coming out of federal and state agencies such as the CFPB and the FTC.
  • Ability and drive to take ownership of projects and tasks.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity.
  • Confident self-starter with strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively and proactively provide sound legal advice, exercise good business judgment, and work well with other attorneys, management, and cross functional stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with, and strong interest in e-commerce, PayPal, Venmo, Honey, mobile and alternative payments, emerging payments technology, and the payments industry.
  • Comfortable with gray areas and interpreting and applying the law in unsettled contexts.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities.
  • Admitted to, and in good standing with, a state bar.
