Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance, the Sr. Manager of Business Intelligence is for the overall architecture, design, development, implementation, optimization, maintenance, testing, documentation and operation of business applications managed by FP&A to support financial planning and decision making. The Sr. Manager will lead business intelligence initiatives to include proactively identifying and implementing solutions to meet information needs. The individual in this position will supervise and manage a team composed of a Sr. System Administrator and a Sr. Business Systems Analyst.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall architecture, design, development, implementation, optimization, maintenance, testing, documentation and operation of business applications managed by FP&A, high-performance data models, reports, dashboards and BI solutions for analytics to support financial planning and decision making
  • Provide technical direction and ensure that technical and process architectures (application and information) in Tidemark and other business applications are implemented and maintained to support FP&A's core business functions
  • Lead the BI team within FP&A to establish the ongoing development and operations of a business intelligence architecture that enables fact-based decision making and ad hoc analysis and insight
  • Develop, maintain optimize and enforce the governance framework and processes, including a documentation library for all systems, processes, data flow and reporting, to ensure data integrity, information optimization, and performance of financial planning and analytics tools managed by FP&A
  • Gather business and functional requirements and apply expert-level understanding of business intelligence and analytics technologies to translate these requirements into robust, scalable, operable solutions that work well within the overall data architecture with understanding of the critical business implications
  • Partners with internal business partners and leaders across the organization to understand the current and future analytical and reporting goals and deliver data-driven scalable reporting solutions to drive strategic and tactical decisions
  • Collaborate with FP&A leadership to establish vision, planning & prioritization for the Business Intelligence team to ensure adequate use of resources and shifting priorities
  • Working with business intelligence tools, can model multidimensional datasets, and collaborate effectively with business leaders to answer key business questions
  • Provides/oversees training and end-user support as required on systems available for financial planning and reporting
  • Deep dive into data sets to answer key business questions using SQL, Excel, and other data manipulation languages
  • Maintain data integrity, perform QA Audits and diligently troubleshoot issues
  • Support senior management with financial and strategic projects, including but not limited to: financial models, scenario-driven forecasting models, industry benchmarking, key performance metrics, and ad-hoc analyses
  • Evaluates and recommends on the acquisition and implementation of vendor software to assist in functions such as market, contract, and executive information systems analyses
  • Supervises and manages a team composed of a Sr. System Administrator and a Sr. Business Systems Analysts.
  • Partners with IT and EBS teams in the Workday to Tidemark and Tidemark to Workday annual budget rollouts
  • Partners with Human Resources and Financial teams in annual close/year-end audits and the annual merit process and reconciliation
  • Generates all financial reports for presentation to the Board; reports are to be professionally presented (graphically enhanced) and ready to distribute
  • Serves as liaison with local and central information technology units to ensure compliance with university standards as well as the use of proven state of the art technology and business applications
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and advisor representing the Office of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A); sits and participates in committes involving the implementations of new systems as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director for Finance


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of computer information systems and financial applications
  • Knowledge of relational, multi-dimensional, and object-oriented database design principles
  • Advanced skills in SQL (structured query language) and the development of large relational database solutions
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Strong statistical analysis toolkit including financial modeling and scenario analysis, attribution and regression analysis, and forecasting
  • Experience with database design applications and data processing flowcharting techniques
  • Mastery of modern data visualization and analysis tools and techniques including query and reporting programs, and data integration techniques
  • Knowledge of accounting and financial principles in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and federal reporting requirements
  • Proficiency in ERP/EPM systems, reporting tools, and MS Office applications including Visio and Project
  • Proficiency in computer programming languages and visual basic for applications (VBA)
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills
  • Strong communication, writing (narrative, tabular, and graphical), and listening skills
  • ·Teaching and training skills and the ability to lead all-day training sessions with audiences at all business levels
  • ·Ability to adapt to multiple business needs and/or changing environments
  • ·Ability to present business applications and data-supported recommendations to faculty and Senior Administration in a manner clearly understandable to a non-technical audience. Accuracy, timeliness, reliability, and usefulness of data is a must
  • Knowledge of project management, process improvement principles and the design of effective and efficient systems and processes


Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Information Techonology, Computer Science or a related field is required. Master's Degree in Information Technology is highly preferred.


Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):
  • 5-7 years of relevant, professional work experience managing, developing and implementing enterprise business applications and BI/Analytics solutions is required.
  • Experience in services and higher education industries is preferred. Other experience requirements include but are not limited to:
    • Experience in working with people at all levels of an organization and in leading directly or indirectly the work of others
    • Experience in collecting and retrieving large amounts of data using SQL language, analyzing such data, and summarizing and presenting recommendations based on findings to technical and non-technical audiences
    • Experience in working with, creating, manipulating, and connecting sources of information together to include databases and systems
    • Experience in creating and monitoring operational performance via the use of metrics and key performance indicators
    • Experience in formulating and creating mathematical models, reports, presentations, and dashboards, and in testing what-if and optimal scenarios using available modeling and/or statistical software and techniques to include forecasting
