Job Summary:

Provide technical leadership, service and process support between Commodities, functional groups (Global Supply Chain, Plant Operations, Distribution) and support staff (QRC, R&D) to insure that technical, functional, and global operational goals are met for the Hershey Company with respect to commodity supply with a focus on cocoa and dairy.

Assume primary responsibility for fundamental applications research and development projects of significant importance, high complexity, and scope with an emphasis on practical solutions where precedents may not exist. Independently determine technical approaches for projects. Derive solutions to problems through application of experience, business, and technical expertise where little or no precedence exists and original "out of the box" thinking is essential. May coach, technically direct or manage a staff of up to 7 professionals.

Interact closely with senior level professionals and senior management in the Global Supply Chain on technical, quality, regulatory and food safety aspects, and risk mitigation for commodity sourcing with a focus on cocoa and dairy and their by-products including crumb.

Support strategic technical projects in other commodity procurement areas as needed.

Act as the company wide consultant in areas of expertise, giving advice and making authoritative technical recommendations regarding projects to be undertaken and implementation of results to senior management, professionals, and technical staff. May be responsible for all phases of an improvement/development project or program.

Interact with other industries and professional institutions as required to exchange information and ideas in area of expertise.

Role Responsibilities:

Project Leadership (60%) - Manages multiple projects of a large scale and of significant importance or assumes primary responsibility for undertaking and executing fundamental projects of extremely high complexity and scope related to products and processes for chocolate, confectionery snacks and commodity ingredients. Expert level ability to combine the practical and the theoretical for resolving applications problems or supervising development efforts of projects having a large and significant impact on the Company's current and/or future business interests. Works independently or under light supervision. May be responsible for all phases of improvement or development of a project or program.

Strategic Planning Support (25%) - Develop, design and conduct/supervise testing of commodities that will address shortages, changes in sources, minimize cost or improve quality within the confines of effective manufacturing. Support product and process research, development and problem-solving concerning product formulations or processing parameters that improves confectionery or chocolate product quality, shelf stability brand margins or production efficiency.

Internal Cacao and Dairy Expert (10%) - Develop and implement formulas for beans, liquor, butter blends, and cocoa products. Develop testing and monitoring procedures to support changes based on quality and business needs. Provide technical support/services to staff and operating locations on commodity related issues including external relations with globally outsourced commodity vendors and Global Supply Chain requirements.

Training and Consulting (5%) - As a recognized technical and operations expert, train, consult and participate in sensory panels related to commodity food items. Train and develop others to assist and support to assure continuity of internal expertise on commodities. Provide technical leadership and direction for other professionals, interns or co-ops that assure timely completion of identified improvement/research projects. Act as the internal cacao expert. Act as liaison for outside associations as they relate to cacao products. Explore potential for new sources of commodities by traveling to third world source locations. Provide technical support to source locations when appropriate.

   

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Science or related field. Master's Degree or a Ph.D. preferred.

Minimum of 15 years' experience in:

  • The evaluation, processing, and utilization of cacao products. This includes formal sensory training/evaluation/tasting of cocoa-based products, confectionery, chocolate, chocolate processes and cocoa products
  • Expert in the sensory classification of basis cacao products
  • Confectionery and chocolate applications experience with ingredients, product formulas, and processing technologies in Engineering, Manufacturing, R&D, or related function
  • Working knowledge of plant, R&D, procurement, and QRC operations and personnel
  • Working knowledge of cocoa agribusiness and country-of-origin processing
  • Experience with outside industry and government associations related to cocoa agribusiness and confectionery industry
  • Foreign travel, including country of origin cocoa regions

ALSO:

* Expert knowledge in cocoa (beans, butter, liquor, and powder) and chocolate processing and formulation

* Working knowledge of source country origin cacao agribusiness from farm to commercial products

* Working knowledge of cocoa commercial supply network, including major suppliers, including source country origin supply network

* Internally recognized by peers and management as an authoritative resource in cocoa commodities. Fully competent in the application of expertise to the work assigned whether on product or processes

* Understands the key technical, quality, regulatory and food safety aspects, and risk mitigation for commodity sourcing with a focus on cocoa and dairy.

* Mastered expert technical and applications working knowledge in at least 4 product or ingredient fields of science (chocolate, confectionery, candy, gum, mints snacks, dairy, coconut, sugars, nuts, panning, enrobing, depositing, moulding, bean formulations, cocoa powders, butter, or liquor processing)

* Demonstrates knowledge of products and processes at the manufacturing facilities applying to areas of expertise that allow for change ideation and strategic decision making

* Demonstrated understanding of the interactions between food science principles, product formulations, financial standards, cost management and operations efficiencies Proven problem solving and decision-making abilities

* Working knowledge related to Quality and Regulatory Compliance, Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP in the United States and Internationally

* Working knowledge of sensory methods, with experience in liquors, beans, and butters

* Works independently, exercising a high degree of judgment and independent thinking in project execution

* Demonstrated management and leadership skills

* Understanding of the business side for technical decisions

* Creative use of technical and business knowledge for developing and completing assignments

* Technical project responsibility/experience

* Proven time management skills to establish priorities and follow through to assure timely completion

* Expert presentation skills, capable of presenting the Corporations position in depositions related to cocoa products

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills

* Interpersonal skills that allow for effective working relationships with Supervisors, Managers, Directors, Vice Presidents, and the Chief Executive Officer

* Self-starting, hands on and results oriented

* Foreign travel to 20% is a requirement
