Meet the team:

As an influential member of Dexcom's Advanced Research & Technology organization, the Sr Staff Scientist will lead proof-of-concept and feasibility initiatives focused on novel enzymes and biorecognition elements, leading to the development of the Company's next generation biosensor products. The ideal candidate comes equipped with a track record of innovative thinking within the biosensors and medical devices fields and demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally in a highly collaborative, fast-paced innovation environment. The individual is expected to have clear understanding of the technical and business challenges associated with medical device development and will be responsible for conceiving, developing, validating, and implementing technical solutions that meet business objectives. In this capacity, the scientist will drive the creation and maintenance of performance targets, develop and reduce concepts to robust feasibility demonstrators, identify and mitigate risks, interface with external partners and collaborate with internal stakeholders. The individual will also be tasked with interfacing with external partners and CROs / CMOs, evaluating new technology licensing and investment opportunities, and will collaborate with internal stakeholders to transition advanced research / Phase 0 programs to core product development initiatives.

Where you come in:

  • You will lead the conceptualization and reduction to practice of novel enzymes and biorecognition elements for integration into wearable biosensors, establishing relevant screening conditions for the same
  • Likewise, you will actively collaborate with external CRO and CMO partners to initiate development of novel enzymes and biorecognition elements; evaluate novel enzymes that partners have independently developed
  • You will conceive of, design, and perform experiments that assess enzyme or biorecognition element behavior for biosensor applications
  • You will work with sensor integration team to establish performance targets for novel enzymes and biorecognition elements enabling robust system design
  • You will work with vendors to assess supply, controls, and acceptance criteria for enzymes and biorecognition elements used in research-grade and commercial products, supporting material scale up for downstream processing and prototyping
  • Developing technical strategies pertaining to new analyte sensors, maintaining project timelines, and communicating to other stakeholders are activities you will manage
  • You understand impact to enzyme and biorecognition elements when subject to reconstitution in aqueous-phase environments, sterilization cycles, distribution testing, varying environmental conditions, shelf-storage, and aging
  • You will collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, PMO, QA/CA/RA, manufacturing, corporate strategy and other internal stakeholders to align on design targets and ensure technical and commercial feasibility
  • You will partner with development teams to develop and test new biosensor prototypes built from novel enzymes or biorecognition elements
  • Identifying, procuring, installing, and qualifying new equipment and processes from prototype to pilot scale are activities you will lead
  • Your ability to develop procedures, plans, protocols and reports will ensure that designs and processes meet product specifications, regulatory requirements and standards
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date lab records, notebooks, test procedures, and protocols are key proficiencies that you have
  • You understand and apply basic laboratory safety protocols, including chemical hygiene and waste disposal procedures according to company and local EHS regulations

What makes you successful:
  • You have a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Enzyme Engineering, Protein Biochemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related discipline with 7+ years of hands-on experience with characterization of physical, chemical, and catalytic activity of enzymes
  • You bring a track record of demonstrated knowledge and experience in protein engineering, with a strong preference towards enzyme engineering (extensive knowledge of screening, designing, expressing, purifying and characterizing proteins/enzymes); major plus if applied towards diagnostic and biosensor device applications
  • You have strong analytical and experimental skills for enzyme characterization, and receptor-ligand interaction characterization
  • You have a strong quantitative understanding of ligand/receptor interactions such as binding kinetics and enzyme kinetics as well as redox reactions and electrochemistry
  • You are widely considered as an expert in experimental design, assay development (optical and/or electrochemical), statistics, DOE techniques, and data analysis methods and software (JMP and/or Matlab preferred)
  • You are highly organized and detailed oriented

Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 13+ years related experience or a Masters degree and 8+ years equivalent industry experience of a PhD and 5+ years of experience.

Exempt Salary Details

  • The annual base salary range for this role is $135,100 to $225,100. Final compensation package will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, business needs and market demand.
