FRIB Nuclear Engineering Lead

Position Summary

Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.

As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.

User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Leads conceptualization and guides design development for air and water systems in high radiation areas utilizing external engineering resources.
  • Assures designs fully and appropriately consider the impact of adjacent systems and the potential for leaks, contamination, and collection
  • Assures implementation of approved design plans and as-built validation and commissioning
  • As system owner, provides day-to-day stewardship that ensures configuration control, operability, and reliability of these non-conventional utility systems.
  • Assures that ALARA principles are integrated into the design of systems to control and limit radiation risks in air and water utilities
  • Supports the development of policy, programs, and procedures that codify the design and use of utility systems in high radiation environments
  • Ensure designs and operational envelopes align with FRIB's mission, regulatory framework, and U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) expectations.
  • Integrates interfaces and adjacencies with teams that design and fabricate physics research instrumentation and accelerator equipment to ensure activated water and air systems are properly configured
  • Monitors testing, operation, and maintenance of these systems to ensure operational availability and continued planned performance
  • Participate in several projects simultaneously and is accountable for maintaining schedules to meet project requirements
  • Leads and direct the work of others within the group as well as support personnel
