Job Summary

To provide chemical inventory management program services within the Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS) operation of the Environmental Health & Safety Department. Incumbent is expected to carry out assigned tasks under the direction of the Hazard Materials Tracking Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Provide safety services for the campus community in accordance with EH&S standards and procedures and with regulatory requirements.
  • Perform deliveries, transfers and shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous materials on campus.
  • Operate and maintain technical equipment and components associated with assigned functions.
  • Comply with occupational health, safety and environmental rules and regulations, and with University policies and guidelines.
  • Receive, inspect, add to inventory, barcode and deliver chemicals destined for laboratories and other campus facilities.
  • Add and maintain safety data sheets (SDS) for the chemicals in the CEMS inventory system.
  • Perform quality assurance/quality control procedures to ensure that the data in CEMS is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Collect inventory sheets from laboratories and remove the bar codes and associated chemicals from the CEMS inventory as appropriate
  • Provide information, guidance and technical assistance regarding safe chemical storage and handling to the staff in campus laboratories.
  • Provide customer service in a professional manner.
  • Operate departmental motor vehicles to deliver and transport materials.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • High School Diploma.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Strong oral, written, organizational, record keeping, quantitative and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of materials.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form.
  • Ability to do calculations and prepare statistical data and records.
  • Proficiency with computer applications; including Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety principles and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Experience related to inventorying.
  • Experience in the safe handling of chemicals.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Supplemental course work in Biology and Chemistry.
  • Associate's Degree or higher in a scientific discipline.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Walk to and from buildings and vehicles, outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Physically able to wear personal Protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to stand, walk, drive, lift heavy objects, twist, carry, pull/push, repetitive movement, bending, climbing, reaching and sitting.

    Skills Acquired on the Job:

    • Knowledge of EH&S standards and procedures.
    • Knowledge of inventory systems and processes.
    • Knowledge of environmental and laboratory compliance service programs and related concepts.
    • Knowledge of hazardous materials, safety data sheets and evaluation procedures.
    • Knowledge of specific laboratory health and safety regulations and requirements.
    • DOT (Department of Transportation) Hazardous Materials Shipping Training.

    Work Schedule

    Monday - Friday; 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
