Job Summary and Description:

The technical executive represents EPRI in a visible and critical technical area. Oversees work in this area and represents EPRI both internally and externally. Recognized as a subject matter expert and is involved in the research work of other public and private organizations in this field. Maintains expertise by in-depth involvement in the state-of-the-art research and technology development in the field. Contributes to multiple projects within and cross sector on whatever basis necessary for effective utilization of expertise.

* Designs and oversees research studies to be performed by EPRI will advance the state-of-knowledge in the field.

* Interacts with EPRI leaders to develop EPRI's position in the field; consults with leaders in member organizations to assist in their strategy development relating to field of expertise.

* Supports EPRI M&TS in representing EPRI and establishing EPRI's technical credentials and leadership.

* May lead a small team of capable technical staff members and advises/mentors developing technical staff, does not have direct management responsibility. Coaches and mentors internal staff in associated technical areas of expertise.

Education:

Advanced degree in science/engineering or equivalent experience required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Recognized as having expert knowledge in a broad field of expertise by the science, engineering or technical community both within and outside EPRI.

* Ability to communicate complex science and technical issues in a way that can influence both the technical community, membership and Sector Council

* Requires little day to day supervision. Receives direction and guidance to set high level priorities.

* Communicates project status, plans, and results during member visits, presentations to Sector Council.

* Ability to communicate science and technical studies and results in a manner that exhibits technical expertise but also is easily understood by energy stakeholders.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Additional Job Information:

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), in partnership with the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), has launched the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI) to address the need to accelerate development and demonstration of low-carbon energy technologies. The LCRI is investigating the production, storage, delivery, and use of low-carbon chemical energy resources - such as hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic fuels, and biofuels - needed to enable affordable pathways to economy-wide decarbonization by mid-century.

The position involves designing and leading research, development, and demonstration projects related to low-carbon chemical energy carriers and fuels. The position will report into the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI) and will provide technical support for all research areas associated with the low-carbon resources value chain. The position will engage with LCRI members and global stakeholders to develop a wide range of research projects.

  • Designs and oversees research and demonstration studies that will advance the state-of-knowledge for expanded use of hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels, and synthetic fuels
  • Evaluates technologies for potential improvements and considers adoption pathways for deployment
  • Identifies opportunities to expand use of technologies from other sectors and industries
  • Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required
  • Prepares proposals, technical publications, and delivers presentations
  • Leads national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations

Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the following areas is required:

  • Alternative fuels production pathways using Power-to-X and advanced mechanisms
  • Fuels storage and delivery infrastructure with a focus on blending low-carbon resources to transition towards a low-carbon future
  • Operation of distribution networks and understanding of infrastructure
  • Connecting capabilities of alternative low-carbon fuels with consumer demand and requirements (applications in industrial, manufacturing, commercial, and transportation sectors are core focus areas)

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
