Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Director of OTT protects intellectual property developed by employees, manages patent applications and relationships with external counsel; oversees several state incubation funding programs; maintains relationships with faculty and with industry through various activities; commercializes inventions and technologies, and oversees collection and distribution of net revenues; works with internal counsel to oversee contract negotiations.

Level Scope:
Oversees through subordinate Managers a large, complex organization with multiple functional disciplines/occupations, OR manages a program, regardless of size, that has critical impact upon the campus. Significant responsibility for formulating and administering policies and programs, manages significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a very high degree of autonomy. Frequently influences business decisions made by senior leadership. Oversees through subordinate Managers the accountability and stewardship of campus resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Negotiates and influences others to understand and accept new concepts, practices and approaches.

Essential Functions:
60% of the time the Technology Transfer, Director must:

  • Protect and commercialize technology for the benefit of the university and citizens of Idaho
  • Promote the identification and disclosure of technologies, discoveries, and inventions by University faculty, staff, and student employees
  • Assist inventors and patent counsel in compiling information needed for the preparation of patent applications
  • Serve as a liaison between researchers and off-campus commercial interests
  • Develop and maintain policy, education and training, maintain and report data
  • Establish and maintain a positive, supportive operation in which high quality services are delivered effectively and efficiently
  • Bring together local, regional, and state resources that will help the University transfer its technology successfully to companies
  • Ensure licensee data and records are secure and maintained in a current, accurate, and usable form
  • Collaborate with sister institutions and other institutions of higher education to ensure best and current practices for effective and efficient tech transfer activities

35% of the time the Technology Transfer, Director must:
  • Promote effective commercialization of research at Boise State
  • Intellectual property management - patents and copyrights
  • Senior Design Agreements - negotiation, execution and education for students and instructors
  • Patent/Market Landscape Reports; managing commercialization and marketing of IP (market research and commercialization plans, campaign sheets).
  • Assist with spin-out/start-up
  • Outreach to potential sources of funding
  • Preparation and execution of commercialization plans
  • Investigate opportunities to bring to and engage the Boise State University Research Foundation

5% Duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience as an effective manager
  • Experience in a broad range of IP and commercialization issues

Minimum Qualifications:
A Juris Doctor and a minimum of three years related professional experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in one of the U.S. Patent and Trade Mark Office's (USPTO) recognized technical subjects
  • Admission to practice patent cases before USPTO
  • Experience working with university research foundations

Salary and Benefits:
Salary starts at $121,000 depending on experience.
