Description
Locations hiring: Lexington, Gothenburg, North Platte, Wallace, Ogallala, Big Springs, Broken Bow, Ansley, Oconto, Mullen, Arthur, Hyannis, Stapleton, and/or Thedford.

NDOT temporary summer employees normally work until November 30, 2021. Hours may depend on weather, or activity, schedule may be more or less than 40 hours per week. Daily work schedule, starting, ending hours and dates vary based on work activity. Overtime will be required; work shifts vary throughout the year. Employee responds to emergency call outs (24 hours a day, seven days a week); must be able to respond to Maintenance yard within 30 minutes after notification.
Examples of Work
The successful applicant is trained to perform transportation maintenance tasks and activities. The employee will operate Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) motorized vehicles and equipment, working in all types of weather in the heat, cold, rain, wind, and possibly extreme conditions and will work alone or on a team in a work crew. Job duties may include traffic control, installing and removing traffic control devices as directed on Nebraska's State Highway System or its interstate. Perform as a traffic control flagger and flag traffic. Operate a pilot or escort vehicle for mobile operations. Perform labor as required for road repair, pot hole patching, pavement sealing and road repair, litter removal, fence repair or guardrail repair. Operate machinery, machine mow and or perform tree trimming or removal. Required to safely lift move, drag, load, and unload various materials equipment, supplies, devices, hazardous materials or objects. Remove carrion from the roadway and dispose of the carcass. Perform road repair activities that require physical endurance to move, shovel, spread, and compact subgrade and surfacing materials. The incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as safety-toed boots, hardhat, googles, vests and other appropriate safety equipment and required to attend safety training and follow the prescribed methods and perform the work using the required safety procedures while wearing the proper personal protective equipment. Perform any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years of age, and possess a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED (NOT REQUIRED): Experience in using hand and power tools; experience on highway construction or operation of dump trucks or farm or heavy equipment.

OTHER: Employment is contingent upon an acceptable motor vehicle record. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: Procedures, practices, and methods of the operation, preventive maintenance and minor repair of vehicles and equipment. Skill in: Reading interpreting and understanding, applying Federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, and policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices, public contact and quality customer service practices. Basic math, English, and computer systems. Good oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to maintain positive crew and social relationships. Skilled in the proper use of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment to perform work activities within established methods, quality and timeframe. Ability to: Perform basic tasks or functions. Comprehend directions. Work under close direction and instruction. Perform with focus on task to produce the desired results. Properly and safely use NDOT tools, vehicles, and equipment specific to work activity. Ability to comprehend what is needed, to plan, coordinate, analyze, and perform multiple tasks, and be a self-motivated to perform. Ability to competently operate NDOT computer applications after training. Ability to learn computer systems, traffic control methods, practices and procedures, federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policy, and procedures pertaining to work activities. May work under stressful conditions in traffic on the roadway or as the responsible person for work zone safety. Must be able to safely move, drag, lift and carry 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; lift above the shoulder, work in inclement weather outdoors in extreme temperature. Safely work in and around high-speed traffic for extended periods of time.
