The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate. Essential Job Duties:

The Threat Risk and Crisis Coordinator position provides professional individual and group counseling services and outreach to NC State students as well as consultation to University administrators, staff and others who have concerns about the mental/emotional status of NC State students. In addition, this position is part of an in-house team for evaluating and consulting in cases involving a potential high risk for violence to self and/or others.

One full-time, 12 month position with responsibility to assist in all areas of Counseling Center functioning including:

Generalist Responsibilities:

  • Individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic, and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the University
  • Development and participation in Outreach programming
  • Providing evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and conduct problems
  • Some participation in after-hours "on call" and possible evening office hours
  • Participation in continuing education focusing on ethical requirements for clinical practice and culturally informed practice
  • Participation in committee work as well as treatment teams when appropriate
  • This position is expected to participate in the training and/or supervision of graduate students and early career clinicians
  • General administrative responsibilities

Shared Risk Assessment / Management Responsibilities:
  • As part of a Counseling Center in-house team, evaluate potentially high risk, violent, and suicidal students
  • Serve as a leader on the Threat, Assessment and Crisis Team (TRaC) by organizing, scheduling, leading and attending weekly TRaC meetings to provide clinical expertise, knowledge, and recommendations for intervention regarding psychological and behavioral signs, symptoms, and risk factors pertaining to student cases involving actual or potential violence, or serious psychological disturbance
  • When requested by the University, provide similar clinical expertise in faculty/staff cases where there is a concern about actual or potential violence, or serious psychological disturbance
  • Develop and implement strategies to streamline hospitalizations, minimize disruptions to the CC, and document follow up plans for hospitalized students, and to serve as liaison to hospitals and community providers
  • Coordinate with CAS and other community organizations and providers to identify potential resources for high-risk students and students of concern
  • Serve as a consultant to Counseling and other University faculty, staff, and administrators who express concerns about cases involving potential or actual threats of violence, or serious psychological disturbance
  • Assist in coordinating response strategy within the Counseling Center for campus emergencies (eg., suicides, accidents, deaths, safety crises)
  • Maintain an assessment protocol for our clients and for referrals from other offices on campus, including appropriate releases, interview protocols, and test protocol and supplies
  • Assist the Executive Director and leadership team in preparation of reports related to functional area including annual report, budget preparation, and special reports to administrators at NC State, as needed
Other Responsibilities:

This position may involve participation in supervision/training of graduate students and program evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Master's degree required in psychology, counseling, or clinical social work or closely-related field.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Appropriate licensure must be obtained/maintained according to NC laws. For psychologists this is a licensed psychologist with three years of post license experience. For social workers this is a LCSW with two years post license experience and for counselors this is a LCMHC-S
  • Established commitment to culturally informed and responsive services
  • Candidate must possess strong clinical skills and experience in handling crisis situations
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful candidates will be generalists who are multi-culturally affirming and and practice cultural humility, and have experience in working with diverse populations
  • Experience in a university counseling center is strongly preferred with a demonstrated interest in threat and risk assessment and management
  • Preference for candidates with experience utilizing a time-limited model of care
  • Experience with referring to a higher level of care, including involuntary hospitalizations
