Allegheny College is a national liberal arts college where approximately 1,700 undergraduate students excel as they undertake a curriculum built at the intersection of perspectives and the blending of disciplines. This powerful and compelling message represents Allegheny's distinctive position in a crowded marketplace. Allegheny's mission states: Allegheny's undergraduate residential education prepares young adults for successful, meaningful lives by promoting students' intellectual, moral, and social development and encouraging personal and civic responsibility. Allegheny's faculty and staff combine high academic standards and a commitment to the exchange of knowledge with a supportive approach to learning. Graduates are equipped to think critically and creatively, write clearly, speak persuasively, and meet challenges in a diverse, interconnected world.

Allegheny has a successful history of integrated strategic, financial, and campus planning, achieved in large part through a positive, collaborative atmosphere among the staff and faculty. Named the College's 22nd president in January 2019, Dr. Hilary L. Link took office July 1, 2019. Dr. Link has more than 20 years of experience across a broad range of institutions of higher education, from large public and private universities to small private colleges. She has built programs, increased resources, enhanced institutional visibility, and created innovative interdisciplinary and experiential approaches to education.

In recent months, Allegheny College completed the largest fundraising campaign in its 205-year history, raising more than $202 million in gifts and future commitments. Launched publicly during the college's bicentennial celebration in 2015, the "Our Allegheny: Our Third Century Quest" campaign fulfilled its $200 million goal and broke all prior Allegheny fundraising records. Dr. Link noted, "Time and time again, our alumni, parents and friends have demonstrated their unyielding support for Allegheny, even in the most trying of times, as evidenced by record-setting giving to this historic $200 million campaign." The campaign focused on building the college's endowment and increasing annual support, including:

More than $50 million in new scholarships to ensure access and improve affordability;

Nearly $37.5 million for faculty support to provide funds for professional development, visiting scholars and artists and student-faculty research, as well as 12 new professorships, supporting academic programs in global health, political science, interdisciplinary studies, economics, environmental science, art, geology, biology and more;

$30.2 million invested in the college's historic campus, including renovations of Bentley Hall, Carr Hall, Carnegie Hall and athletic fields;

In 2010, Allegheny College set out to be fully carbon neutral within a decade - every building, classroom, office, and residence hall. Engaging the full campus community, and the local community, this goal was achieved. Allegheny is now one of the first ten colleges in the nation, and the first in Pennsylvania history, to receive Second Nature's "Carbon Neutral Campus" award. This is a first step to continued work toward a more sustainable future. New advancements and initiatives include student-designed rain gardens, free campus bike-share, a comprehensive composting program, green roofing, LEED certified buildings, porous parking lots, and geo-exchange heating and cooling.

Allegheny College is a member of the Great Lakes Colleges Association, the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAA Division III), and the Bonner Scholarship Program. Last year, the eighth annual Allegheny College Prize for Civility in Public Life was awarded to Congressman Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for their collaborative work toward criminal justice reform, which resulted in passage of the bipartisan First Step Act. In addition, The Dr. James H. Mullen, Jr. Student Prize for Civility in Public Life is awarded annually to exemplary student leaders who have demonstrated a strong passion for, and deep understanding of, civility on the Allegheny College campus and in community work.

Known for its campus beauty and rich history, Allegheny was established in 1815, by Timothy Alden. A sycamore tree planted by its founder still remains next to Allegheny's oldest building, Bentley Hall. Situated on 79 acres, the central campus boasts 40 major buildings and the recreation area around campus adds another 203 acres. Allegheny owns the Bousson Environmental Research Reserve, a couple of miles east of campus, which is 283 acres of woodlands, ponds, streams, wetlands, diverse habitats, and native wildlife.
A Glimpse of Allegheny's Rigorous Academic Life:

As a prominent liberal arts institution, Allegheny College continues to focus on a holistic approach to education. All faculty participate in the core curriculum and devise classes within their own disciplines that are designed to challenge the minds of first- and second- year students, teach essential skills, and entice curiosity. Students declare both a major and a minor - from an alternate discipline - during their second academic year. Allegheny offers over 50 ever-evolving academic programs from which to choose majors and minors. Before graduating, every Allegheny student will experience the challenging task of envisioning, researching, creating, and defending a "Senior Comp." Students are paired with a faculty mentor to help oversee the project and support students in this transformational accomplishment.

Student Life:

Allegheny is a four-year residential campus, providing a variety of living options to its students, including special interest housing. The College is deeply committed to sustainability in its programs and living environment. Living styles include all-male, all-female, and co-ed residence halls and apartments configured as suites, singles, doubles, triples, and quads. In addition to Living-Learning Communities, special interest houses are available for a wide variety of student interests. Each has a specific mission and focus. In addition to living among peers with similar passions, each group provides programming to educate the campus community.

Allegheny offers over 100 student organizations including campus publications, honorary and leadership groups, performing arts groups, religious organizations, service clubs and special interest groups. Allegheny students are involved in the life of our community, from cheering on friends from the muddy sidelines of a women's rugby game to playfully debating Kierkegaard's theories with the Philosophy Club over lattes at the student-run coffeehouse, Grounds for Change.

Student life at Allegheny is also about speaking up and making a difference. Animated voices resound all over campus, from the outspoken students at the Center for Political Participation to the Jazz Band's cool riffs to the annual serenading of sorority members on the Brooks Hall balcony. Students play a vital role in College decision-making, from helping to determine policies that will influence the future for other students to hiring new faculty to programming entertainment on campus. The Gator Activities Programming (GAP) is an all-student board that brings a diverse range of speakers, movies, comedians, bands and more to Allegheny. Student-inspired and student-directed organizations and activities help students develop leadership skills and make a lasting impact on Allegheny's campus culture.

Civic Engagement helps provide structure and support to the student service movement that matches the real needs of the community to the resources of the student body. Allegheny students serve at over 30 local agencies on a consistent basis completing over 25,000 hours of community service annually. Through service, students demonstrate their civic commitment to issues such as poverty, homelessness, literacy, environmental protection, and domestic violence. Some service programs, such as the Bonner Program, the America Reads Program, and the Computer Literacy Tutoring Program, offer financial assistance to students. Staff members collaborate with faculty and student service leaders to incorporate service-learning into Allegheny courses through the Service-Learning Challenge and through independent work with faculty.

As a founding member of both the NCAA (Division III) and NCAC, Allegheny is committed to the philosophy that athletics can and should complement academic life rather than compete with it.
