Blue Cross of Idaho has an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Vice President (VP), Controller & Chief Accounting Officer, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. This role is responsible for the accounting operations of the company to include the production of periodic financial statements, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and maintenance of a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate financial risk. The individual in this role will enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with statements of statutory accounting principles (SSAP) and US GAAP, where required. The responsible functions include accounting, external financial reporting, corporate tax, annual audit, Model Audit Rule compliance, treasury (including oversight of investments and cash management), payroll, accounts payable, cash receipts, and support of internal management reporting. As an executive and officer of the Company, you will prepare and deliver presentations to the Board of Directors and partner with operational areas to ensure alignment between business needs and accounting.

To be considered for this opportunity, you have:

Experience: minimum of 12 years experience in public accounting, accounting for a public/private company, and/or preparing and filing consolidated US GAAP financial statements, to include management experience

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master's in Business Administration preferred

Certifications/Licenses: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

In this role, we will ask you to:


  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate statutory standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Protect the company's assets by establishing, monitoring, and executing internal controls.

  • Ensure accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements that are used for management reporting and required statutory filings.

  • Ensure filing of accurate Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and Idaho Department of Insurance statutory reports.

  • Owns relationship with independent audit firm.

  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and complying with policies and procedures.

  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting and expense management.

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge on team by ensuring adequate budget such that team obtains all required continuing professional education.

  • Provide leadership in internal communications between Finance and the rest of the organization creating and promoting a positive and supportive work environment.

  • Establish department objectives that support company goals and produce regular status reports.

  • Prepare an operating budget that reflects the forecasted needs of the department and control expenditures to assure adherence to approved budgets.

  • Ensure effective workflows, increase system efficiencies, monitor quality performance measures and confirm appropriate completion of work assignments, and change these as appropriate.

  • Maintain high quality of staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees.

  • Maintain staff performance by coaching, counseling, and monitoring staff performance and appraising performance.

  • Promote teamwork, discussion, and cooperation among staff and other departments. Ensure timely communication and sharing of information with team members.

  • Work with staff to resolve work-related issues and concerns. Promote a respectful and diverse workplace.

  • Develop and maintain departmental policies and procedures.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
