The Division of Research Safety (DRS), https://www.drs.illinois.edu/, is seeking applicants for a Web Applications Developer to provide application, web, database, and report programming and technological support for the Division of Research Safety (DRS) and collaborative support for the Office of Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (OVCRI).

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Application Architecture and Design Development
• Create and maintain modern dynamic data-driven web applications using Microsoft technologies to meet ever-changing research and operational requirements.
• Design, implement and maintain enterprise level Microsoft SQL Server databases; create tables, queries, stored procedures, views, triggers, indexes, etc, which will support online applications and reporting.
• Configure and support third-party "off the shelf systems for the specific needs of DRS and the campus research community; work with system developers to customize and implement solutions. This includes taking business rules and processes and applying to the system, as well as developing reports.

Research Systems and Software Maintenance and Technical Support
• Investigate and resolve application functionality related issues and provide first level support and troubleshooting of various, supported online systems. Troubleshoot technical issues and identify modifications needed in existing applications to meet changing user requirements.
• Maintain legacy IT systems based on older Microsoft technology to assure usability for end users until systems can be replaced with new technology. This includes the evaluation and analysis of new technologies for integration with existing infrastructure. Identify, design, implement and maintain reports; this includes reports for systems (e.g. canned, pre-formatted reports) as well as adhoc reports as needed or requested.
• Produce technical documentation for new and existing applications.
• Participate in meetings with IT team and stakeholders to discuss progress and issues to be resolved. Maintain middleware systems that interface with campus data sources.

Program Administration
• Provide customer service for both internal office staff and the campus research community in support of DRS systems and services.
• Work with other team members to provide exemplary service to faculty, staff and students by way of customer service, training, troubleshooting. Identifying ways of improving services and IT Projects and participate in joint IT meetings with OVCRI IT at regular intervals as necessary in order to further enhance the mission and goals of DRS and OVCRI.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications - Any combination totaling two (2) years from the following categories: progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession, or college course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: 60 semester hours or Associate's Degree equals one (1) year 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree equals two (2) years. Demonstrated programming experience using Microsoft Net technologies or comparable with a focus on programming data-driven web applications. College internships can be applied toward experience, if responsibilities were applicable to this position. Experience with C#, NET, VB NET, T-SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Experience Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft SQL Server, or other Microsoft Office family of applications.

Preferred Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in computer science or an IT-related area. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Experience with many or all of the following: Microsoft MVC; Microsoft Entity Framework; report creation; working with University of Illinois data (EDW, Active Directory, etc.; Web Services or third-party APls; and/or the following programming tools: knockout.js, Ninject, or Kendo UI. Experience working in a university and/or scientific unit/organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Excellent communication, personal relations, and organizational skills. Ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to interpret the needs expressed for capture and maintenance of data and the design of the applications developed. Ability to creatively solve complex problems. Ability to take the initiative and be flexible to perform new responsibilities and adaptability for the changing regulations related to research compliance. Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion with handling confidential and sensitive information. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively, both independently and as a team member, in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under stringent deadlines.

Environmental Demands - Work is mostly performed in a typical office setting. Repetitive keyboarding required

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
