PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION
The Wound Ostomy Nurse (WON) serves as clinical practitioner and consultant for patients with ostomy, wound, and skin care problems and provides expert, integrated, quality care by coordinating clinical care for high-risk patients with complex integumentary issues in the inpatient hospital setting. Services will be provided to patients at both BVRHC campuses.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Duty 1: Uses the nursing process to assess, plan and implement patient care, and evaluate outcomes to provide for the unique physical and emotional needs of each patient. Provides expert, integrated, cost-effective quality care to patients with integumentary and ostomy needs.
Duty 2: Provides consultation and direct assistance to nursing staff in management of patients with altered skin integrity.
Duty 3: Serves as patient educator to all patients (as ordered by physician) undergoing ostomy surgery by assessing pre and post operatively, educating patient/caregiver regarding ostomy care, developing discharge plans and referrals as needed, and marking preoperative stoma sites.
Duty 4: Provides education and precepting to nursing staff on all aspects of pressure injury prevention, wound care management, ostomy management, compression therapies, and integumentary issues.
Duty 5: Participates in quality initiatives/committees/projects associated with wound/ostomy care and pressure injury prevention.
Duty 6: As assigned, completes chart reviews to collect quality of care data and prepares reports/graphs for hospital committees and outside reports.
Duty 7: Meets with product representatives to advise Value Analysis Committee on purchase of patient care items.
Duty 8: Develops and monitors policies and procedures as needed for wound and ostomy care.
Duty 9: Documentation is consistent with hospital policies and procedures.
