Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Yard Hostler reports to the Transportation Operations Manager and is responsible for moving trailers on property, hook and unhook trailers.  Observes Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act (FMSCA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations to maintain compliance. 

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Drive and maneuver yard goat and trailers from one door to another switching out empty trailers with full trailers.
  • Connects air hoses and electrical lines, and manually crank dolly wheels
  • Climb in and out of tractors, yard goat and trailers.
  • Observes all FMSCA, DOT regulations to maintain compliance.
  • Conducts inspections on trailer equipment to ensure road worthiness.  Notifies supervisor of current or anticipated repair needs.
  • Fuel equipment and check trailer reefer fuel levels
  • Maintains radio or telephone contact with supervisor or dispatcher to receive trailer move direction.
  • Must be able to work overtime at times when there is a business need.
  • Must be able to work various shifts and days of the week.
  • Cleans and maintains work areas.
  • May be asked to cover dispatch breaks and lunches.

 While performing the duties of this position, candidates :

  • Are frequently required to walk, stand, and climb or balance.  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Are regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outdoor elements. 
  • Are occasionally exposed to vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

LANGUAGESKILLS
Abilityto read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, andmemos.  Ability to write simplecorrespondence.  Ability to effectivelypresent information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers,clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICALSKILLS
Abilityto add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using wholenumbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

REASONINGABILITY
Abilityto apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-stepinstructions.  Ability to deal withstandardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

EDUCATIONand/or EXPERIENCE
Must have and maintain a valid Driver License; maintain three (3) years of clean driving record. Sixmonths to one year spotter or driver experience. Must be able to demonstratebasic spotter knowledge and functions.
