Under limited supervision, independently performs highly skilled and complex diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of multiple makes and models of heavy-duty trucks, and road construction and maintenance equipment containing multiple, computerized systems/sensors, as well as medium and lightweight vehicles, and other motorized equipment; performs related work as assigned.
Examples of Work
• Diagnose multiple, complex, and varied vehicle and equipment computer systems to determine the cause of intermittent data flow that trips computer codes; make needed adjustments and repairs to preserve the integrity of computer systems.
• Research equipment to identify functions that are computerized, and the schematics of computerized systems. Interview equipment operators to compile information about equipment operation and problems.
• Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, computer, and hydraulic problems and failures to determine the nature, extent, necessity, and cost effectiveness of repairs.
• Research and study structural and procedural schematics and manuals.
• Fabricate and repair equipment and parts by using a variety of welders, welding materials, and methods to adapt incompatible parts, replace unavailable parts, secure attachments, and repair damage.
• Calibrate various systems on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment that distributes various materials as they pertain to road and weather conditions and allow operators to drive the vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Make necessary adjustments and recommendations, as needed, and train operators on these systems when necessary.
• Inspect new equipment to ensure that it meets specifications; set up new equipment to ensure it is road ready.
• Evaluate equipment to identify adjustments needed to accommodate auxiliary attachments, equipment, and operating systems.
• Install, troubleshoot, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, computer, and hydraulic system components to restore equipment to a state of safe and operational state.
• Maintain hydraulics systems; install and monitor electrical systems; repair steering systems; repair suspension systems, brake systems, drive trains, fuel systems, and repair/overhaul and/or replaces diesel and/or gasoline engines.
• Overhaul transmissions and final drives perform repairs and diagnostics of hydraulic systems and rewire electrical systems.
• Perform metal fabrications and major repairs on snowplows and trucks that may require extensive welding.
• Disassemble units, inspect parts for wear, repair, overhaul and replace parts using precision measuring instruments. Inspect reassigned equipment to ensure that it is safe for operation by field personnel.
• Perform diagnosis and repairs on equipment breakdowns in the field. Obtain bids for the parts needed to repair engines.
• Maintain accurate records of time and materials expended. Perform preventative maintenance.
• Operate equipment during emergency snow removal operations. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIRED: Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair, including use of computerized diagnostic instruments and equipment OR post-secondary vocational or technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics including instruction in computerized diagnostic equipment and in automotive/diesel mechanical maintenance and repair practices, equipment, and technologies.

PREFERRED: A degree in auto/diesel mechanics and experience. Experience in the use of hand tools, testing equipment, and diagnosing and troubleshooting problems. Experience or education in diagnosing malfunctions from verbal descriptions in order to repair equipment in the shop or field. Welding/fabrication experience.

OTHER: Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or obtain it within 60 days of hire. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions. Regular and reliable attendance is required to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair, including use of computerized diagnostic instruments and equipment. OR Post-secondary vocational or technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics including instruction in computerized diagnostic equipment and in automotive/diesel mechanical maintenance and repair practices, equipment, and technologies.
• Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or obtain it within 90 days of hire.
• Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
• Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds. Ability to work with limited supervision and be self-motivated.
• Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and EAMS.
• Must be a safe worker that is team oriented.
• Must be able to follow directions with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to read and communicate effectively both orally and in writing to give and receive instructions.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required.
