Examples of Work

Operate or tend stationary engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment such as pumps, compressors, and air conditioning equipment, to supply and maintain heat for buildings. Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of boiler operation to ensure that boilers are operating properly. Test boiler water quality or arrange for testing and take necessary corrective action, such as adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits. Activate valves to maintain required amounts of water in boilers, to adjust supplies of combustion air, and to control the flow of fuel into burners. Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels, and make adjustments to maintain required levels. Fire furnaces gas- or oil-fed boilers, using automatic gas feeds or oil pumps. Monitor and inspect equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions and to ensure that equipment is operating efficiently and safely. Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems. Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work. Adjust controls and/or valves on equipment to provide power, and to regulate and set operations of system or industrial processes. May respond to facility fire alarms or to problems with the fire alarm system to ensure efficient operation of the system and the safety of facility residents, staff, and visitors. May perform semi-skilled to skilled building and equipment maintenance to assist the facility maintenance staff. May lead or supervise lesser skilled operators in performance of above duties and supervise inmate workers. Maintain key and tool control in the Energy Center. Operate, maintain and repair chillers and associated equipment; such as circulating pumps and cooling towers.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: One year of experience maintaining and repairing boilers in a large scale environment.

PREFERRED: At least three years experience in boiler maintenance, operations and repair in a large scale environment. A current water system operator's license.

OTHER: Required to work on-call on a rotating schedule. Applicant accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the standard operation, maintenance, and repair of boilers and related equipment; the occupational hazards and safety precautions of power plant operations; preventative maintenance procedures used in power plant operations; power plant policies and procedures.

Skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to perform boiler equipment maintenance, building maintenance, and/or mechanical maintenance.

Ability to: perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair of boilers and related equipment; operate boilers and related equipment in a safe manner; troubleshoot and identify problems and to recommend a possible course of corrective action; use/operate hand and power tools and equipment in a safe manner work in adverse conditions including high/low temperature extremes and confined areas; understand and follow instructions. Must be able to climb ladders and work with potentially hazardous materials and energy sources. Incumbents will be exposed to plant hazards such as fumes, heat, noise, and high pressure and high speed equipment.
